Chandler brewpub to hold a naming contest for popular ale in 2010 December 30, 2009 Chandler, Ariz. – Dec. 30, 2009 – In response to a cease and desist order from Arizona State University, the SanTan Brewing Company of Chandler plans to change the name of its popular Sun Devil Ale. The local brewpub will hold a naming contest from January through February 28, 2010.
“When we first brewed the Sun Devil Ale, the intention was to create a local hand-crafted product with a name that reflects our participation in the local community,” said Anthony Canecchia, Owner and Head Brew Master of SanTan Brewing Company. “We decided not to fight Michael Crow’s empire and instead will let our loyal patrons come up with an alternate name.”
SanTan Brewing Company has been instructed to cease and desist use of the Sun Devil Ale moniker immediately.
“The Sun Devil name is used by many local businesses,” Canecchia continued. “But the ASU Board of Directors believes only ASU has the right to use the Sun Devil name and have flexed their muscles to prevent a small community brewpub from using it on the menu.”
The brew formerly known as Sun Devil Ale is a new breed of West Coast American Ales. Using fresh Cascade and Centennial hops grown in the Pacific Northwest, it’s characterized by a light citrusy hop flavor balanced with a firm caramel malt character. Deep, golden-maroon in color, the ale is already a pub favorite that goes excellent with everything from bacon cheeseburgers to filet mignon.

Contest participants will not only name the beer, but design a new logo as well. Prizes for the contest winner include a keg of the yet-to-be-named ale.
“This all works out because now we can get the community involved in naming this great local beer,” said Canecchia. “We’re looking for names that are creative, memorable and characteristic of the ale.”
